Honorable Marion Reid

Honorable Marion Loretta Reid C.M, O.P.E.I, LLD, Dhum was born to Michael Joseph Doyle and Loretta Whalen Doyle on January 4th, 1929, the fifth child in a family of eight.

Marion attended the one-room school in North Rustico, Stella Maris High School and Prince of Wales College. During her scholastic career she won the John H. Bell Debating Prize and two scholarships for academic excellence. Her teaching career lasted 21 year, the last three as principal of St. Ann’s Elementary School.

In 1949 Marion married Lea Reid of Stanley Bridge. They parented eight children. The family has increased to 18 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

Marion was elected the 1st Queens representative in the Provincial Legislative for the years 1979 -1989. She was the first woman speaker in Atlantic Canada. In 1990 she was appointed Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island and served as the Queen’s Representative from 1990 to 1995. Again she was the first woman in Atlantic Canada to hold this office.

Over the years Marion has received many awards for her volunteer work including the Order of Canada, the Order of Prince Edward Island, Honorary Doctorate from the University of Prince Edward Island and Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, N.S, The Queen’s Jubilee Medal, the 125 Commemorative Medal and knighted in the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. Marion is a life member of Sterling Women’s Institute a past President of the Catholic Women’s League, the first Island recipient of the Red Cross Humanitarian Award, the Walter R Shaw Beautification Award and the Rotary Paul Harris Fellow Award.

Marion’s latest achievement is the author of an historical award winning book, These Roots Run Deep, published in 2005. An engaging and popular public speaker, Marion has captivated her audience on varied topics and continues to do so. Her hobbies are reading, gardening, card playing, and visiting.

Marion lives in the original Reid Homestead on the Reid Road. The family looks forward to warmly welcoming everyone to the 2008 Reid Reunion.

Robert Arnold Reid

Robert Arnold Reid, son of Leander Reid and Florence Turner Reid, was born on May 28th, 1925. Robert grew up on the Reid Homestead with his siblings, went to the rural school then to St. Dunstans University where he graduated with a B.A Degree.

Robert was a man of sterling character. He possessed a quiet disposition, had a great wit and enjoyed a game of golf. Due to the recurrence of kidney stones which necessitated for operation, Robert was limited in his choice of profession.

Robert lived with his parents and was involved in the farming operation. In 1960 he moved with his parents from the Canada Seaspan property in Hope River to West Royalty where Leander and Florence had built a new house.

Robert’s health continued to be a problem. He sought medical advice at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Mass. In 1970 his kidneys failed and he died on May 22nd, 1970.

His remains were laid to rest beside his parents in St. Ann’s Cemetery in Hope River.
